Give Feedback Like a Sports Coach

As a manager, you play different roles at different times – but the job of a manager, just like that of a coach or teacher, is to inspire people to be better. Most people respond better to encouragement than to criticism, so give praise when you can. According to Sir Alex Ferguson, one of the most successful coaches in sports history, nothing is better than hearing: “Well done.” He says, “Those are the two best words ever invented. You don’t need to use superlatives.” At the same time, giving clear criticism is important when your team members don’t meet expectations. If you are too soft in your approach, you won’t be effective – but showing your anger all the time doesn’t work, either. There’s no point in harping on criticism; pick your moment, do it right away, and consider it done. Your timing and tone matter.

Where does the Real Beauty Lie?

Once a very noble, gentleman hired two men, both friends, to work for him. One of them was very handsome while the other was ugly.

The gentleman asked the handsome guy to go and take a bath. While he was away the gentleman turned to the other guy and said “Your friend has given a very bad account of you, he said that you are a thief and of bad character. Is this correct?”

The man replied that his companion was a handsome person, and his exterior beauty must be reflected by inward beauty as well. He could not believe that such a beautiful man could tell a lie.

He therefore said “If my companion has a bad opinion about me, there must certainly be something wrong with me. I am afraid he must be correct.”

The gentleman observed that beauty was only a God given gift, and it did not follow that a person who had a handsome face had a pure heart as well.

The gentleman was greatly impressed with the character and intelligence of this man. In the meantime, the first man had returned from his bath.

The gentleman sent the second man (i.e. the ugly man to have a bath) and in his absence told the handsome man that his fellow man had given a bad account of him. On hearing this, the man burst into invectives against his companion and said that he was a rascal and a liar.

The gentleman thus came to the conclusion that the man with a beautiful face had no inner worth while the man with an ugly face had much inner worth.

The moral of the story is that beauty is only skin deep. All that glitters is not gold.

“Every man is hidden under his own tongue” The tongue reveals the inner intelligence as well as inner vileness .

“The safety of a man lies in holding his tongue”

“No thought stands still. A thought either takes you towards where you wish to go or away from it. So all you need to do if you wish to become successful is spend some time inside your mind weeding out or de-bugging your mind of all the thoughts which do not help get you where you want to go.”
