How Couples Can Cope with Professional Stress

Work stress can cause us to be impatient with our partners or to neglect our duties at home, creating a cycle of anxiety outside the office that makes work pressures even harder to face. To cope with work stress as a couple:

Recognize that you and your partner may have different ways of dealing with stress. Neither way is “right,” so find ways to accommodate one another. For example, let a partner who needs downtime after work have 30 minutes alone, but ask that partner to engage more later — over dinner or out on an evening stroll.

Resist the urge to compare stress levels with your partner. Learn to simply listen and offer help. Try to solicit your partner’s help and empathy in your own stress, without drawing direct comparisons or judging. Each partner is an equal, and all stressors are valid and important.

“This is the art of courage: to see things as they are and still believe that the victory lies not with those who avoid the bad, but those who taste, in living awareness, every drop of the good.”

Assess “Network Fit” When Hiring New Leaders

Research suggests that outside hires at the C-suite level take twice as long to ramp up — and fail at a much higher rate — than leaders promoted from within. If your organization is looking to hire a C-suite leader, change your hiring criteria. Focus not just on skills or background but on network fit — how well the potential hire will fit with the way his or her new colleagues work. Ask your in-house recruiters to take responsibility for network fit. In the rush to fill open positions, in-house recruiting departments may not incorporate their knowledge of how existing teams work in making final selection decisions. But unlike outside recruiting firms, your in-house team knows their working environment well enough to pick the best executive to lead the business.

You see, non-achievers blame their circumstances; winners rise above their circumstances. Some concentrate on the blank wall that boxes them in; winners always look for a way to get under it, over it, around it, or through it.

That’s the life philosophy of Nido Qubein, one of the most remarkable leaders…and people I have ever met. His personal story and what he has achieved are an inspiration to thousands across the country and around the world. You see, Nido came to the United States with limited knowledge of English and only $50 in his pocket, but he learned that the power to affect your future lies within your own hands, and in your attitude. An entrepreneur, business consultant, author and coveted public speaker, Nido is the President of High Point University in High Point, North Carolina.

Literature and history are full of people who suffered from handicaps, had talents that were inferior to those around them, lived in the worst of circumstances, or faced many defeats.

Yet, many of these people are listed among the winners in life’s Hall of Fame.

Why? What made them achieve?
The secret is this: Whether you reach success or failure in life has little to do with your circumstances; it has much more to do with your attitude…with your faithful courage…with your choices!
